My dear one, Quasie, a Blue Andalusian hen, hence the blue legs, getting her daily bit of pampering. As a small chick she jammed her neck and has been somewhat crooked ever since. I handled her the most, thinking I could massage her neck back into joint, but with no success. However, that regular handling has made us thick as thieves and she stands as the "informant" of the flock, letting me know when the water is low, the coop needs a litter changing and when Roman the Rooster is getting out of hand.
Blue Andalusians are a Spanish breed and on the recovery list. Their colors vary from black to "splash", mostly white with splashes of gray, like Quasi and her sister Cecilia.

One of the great assets of living and working in Salem Co., NJ, would have to be our accessibility to locally produced agricultural goodies.
We have been lucky to have several small local farmers provide ALL our eggs.
Big, beautiful eggs from hens that have outstanding living accommodations and lots of room to be hens. Happy hens produce nutritious eggs. It's terrific.
I've become so obsessed with the local hens that we started our own flock at our home. Last year we started with 12 and one rooster, for good measure, and we're planning on adding another gang in the Spring so we can claim to "grow our own".
Here's a couple of shots of my star layers. I'll be posting more about our growing family and hope you'll come to enjoy watching our homesteading efforts!

In October, Joey Campanaro of The Little Owl, Kenmare and Market Table in Manhattan, was asked by CNN about the women who have inspired his cooking career.
What happens next is outstanding, see #4!
It doesn't get much better than being admired by someone you admire...
Thanks Joey!

I am lucky.
If you've been in Philadelphia at any point in the past 50 years, there's a good chance you've been to the Italian Market, "9th Street", and witnessed Di Bruno Brothers.
It's the kind of place we romanticize about, the old style Italian Cheese Shop. Saw dust covered floors, long lines of leering customers, layer upon layer of food from all over the world.
My heart, be still.
I am lucky because the Di Bruno Brothers people really like Gilda's Biscotti and because of that, I get to sell in their new store off the glamorous Rittenhouse Square.
We were invited to do an in~store demo the Saturday before Easter, and the store was heaving with people. It was a glorious sunny afternoon, the spirit was high and we were just thrilled to be a part of it.
The promise of Spring.
